More able, gifted and talented pupils in Wokingham

A definition of Gifted and Talented:

  • Gifted: describes students who have the ability to excel academically in one or more subjects such as English, drama, technology

  • Talented: describes students who have the ability to excel in practical skills such as sport, leadership, artistic performance. These students may well follow a vocational training pathway to accreditation and employment

Identifying gifted children

All schools should be identifying the most able, gifted and talented 5 - 10% of pupils at the school.  It is a relative term ie: 5-10% should be identified regardless of the school’s profile. They are the most able in ‘this school’.  Gifted and talented does not refer to the most able 5 - 10% in the country.  The principles of good teaching for all children provide a foundation for identification of, and effective provision for, more able, gifted and talented students.

Strategies for gifted children

Schools work hard to create the right level of challenge and support for high achieving pupils and use identification strategies which enable them to recognise all kinds of ability.

These include:

  • Information from staff at current and previous schools, pupils and parents/carers
  • Rate of progress
