Instrumental and vocal music services to pupils in Wokingham Local Authority schools are provided through a contract with Berkshire Maestros.  Berkshire Maestros was formerly known as BYMT (Berkshire Young Musicians Trust).

Instrumental lessons and ensembles take place in schools and at other music centres within and outside the Local Authority.

The Wokingham contract is funded through a combination of Central Government grant and local Council contributions. The funding is used to:

  • Provide a free period of learning a musical instrument to all pupils in KS2
  • Support the provision of a structured set of musical ensembles, choirs and orchestras from beginner to advanced level
  • Support other music education projects that widen access and allow more pupils to participate
  • Provide a level of fee remission for pupils whose families are on income support or similar
  • Provide some fee relief towards gifted and talented pupils
  • Provide short concerts in schools

Berkshire Maestros also receives significant funding direct from parents.
