Education Welfare Service

Each Education Welfare officer - EWO - in Wokingham Local Authority is responsible for a number of primary, secondary and special schools. Weekly visits are made to each secondary school to meet with the heads of year to discuss issues relating to pupils' attendance at school. Primary schools are visited on a two/three weekly basis. The EWOs use a variety of working methods with both parents and pupils and liaise closely with other agencies.

The Education Welfare Service is responsive, supportive and effective but ensures that regular attendance at school remains of paramount importance to enable every pupil to have the chance to benefit from the education offered to them.

The main responsibilities of the service are:

  • School attendance
  • Exclusions
  • Child protection
  • Child employment
  • Juvenile justice
