In order to assist in fulfilling its duty of care, schools must ensure that their kilns are inspected and serviced every year for continued safe operation.
Kilns should be located away from general work areas and preferably sited in a separate room or area. Rooms must not be used to store combustible materials or other materials not associated with ceramics. Kilns must only be used by trained personnel, having carried out a full risk assessment. Whenever possible, more than one person should be familiar with kiln controls and emergency procedures. Students should only be allowed to use the kiln under the strict supervision of a competent operator.
Written instructions outlining the safe operation and emergency procedures for the kiln should be clearly displayed in a prominent position next to it, together with a list of those people responsible for the kiln.
Schools must either opt into the Local Authority’s corporate inspection and servicing contract or ensure that alternative arrangements are in place with a competent and experienced contractor who is able to meet the relevant standards and health and safety guidance as required for kilns inspection and servicing.
Annual inspections
Contract and Procurement have set up a three year contract with M K Sparrow (15th February 2010 – 14th February 2013) to carry out annual inspections of the kiln equipment.
Please note that each school is responsible for organising and funding any equipment repairs and/or replacements.
The appointed Contractor, M K Sparrow, is able to provide training in the safe operation of kilns, although this would be quoted for as an additional cost as required.
Hymus Kilns with asbestos lining must not be used in Local Authority schools. If you think you may have a Hymus Kiln please contact the Local Authority.
