The central school meals contract is managed on behalf of Wokingham Borough Council by Edwards and Ward. Edwards and Ward provide school meals to 57 schools within the Borough. The contract started in August 2006 and has been extended to 2011.
Central Education Catering Contract
Around 4000 meals are served every day in the Borough. The majority of schools have kitchens where these meals are prepared from fresh. For those schools with no kitchens meals are transported from another school.
Nutritional standards
The School Food Trust, who are responsible for school food, were established by the Government for Education and Skills in 2005. In September 2008 the Nutritional Standards for Primary Schools were implemented and in 2009 the Nutritional Standards came into force in Secondary Schools. For more information please visit the School Food Trust website.
Menu changes
Edwards and Ward change their menus twice a year: September and February, and each menu runs on a 3-week cycle. Each menu is agreed by the Wokingham Contracts Team after nutritional analysis. When Edwards and Ward design their menus they aim to strike a balance between meeting children’s needs and providing healthy nutritional food. The number of ‘traditional dishes’ and fresh food is common across all our menus.
From September 2009 the cost of a primary school meal is £1.90 and £2.10 for a secondary school meal.
Schools who prefer not to use Edwards and Ward make their own arrangements and use contract caterers or provide the catering service themselves. Please contact the individual schools for further information on the service they provide.
