The Council control certain industrial activities known as 'prescribed processes' that have the potential to cause pollution. Such activities are 'permitted' by the council who check that conditions to minimise pollution are being complied with.
The Pollution Prevention and Control - PPC - Regulations 2000 introduced 3 separate, but linked, systems of pollution control:
-
Local Authority Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control - LA-IPPC - which covers installations known as A2 installations, which are regulated by local authorities - eg. glass manufacturing and foundries,
All 3 systems require the operators of certain industrial processes and other installations to obtain a permit to operate.
A permit will contain a number of conditions with which the operator has to comply and each process will be subject to regular inspection by the regulator. The conditions imposed are intended to control pollution - air pollution for Part B processes - and may involve the operator installing abatement equipment and introducing monitoring systems.
The Council maintains a Public Register of all permits issued which can be viewed during normal office hours at the Council Offices, Shute End, Wokingham. There will be a small fee for any photocopying. A list of permitted processes in Wokingham can be seen by clicking on the icon to the left of this page.
Mobile plant permit holders, such as mobile concrete crushers with permits issued from other Local Authorities should notify the Environmental Health team of their intention to operate in our area. They should include details of their home authority. A copy of their permit should be available for inspection on site for the duration of the works.
