Air Quality - Doing your bit

Although our monitoring results show that the air quality is improving in our Borough, everyone can do their part to further reduce the levels of pollutants and help create a cleaner environment for us all.

How you can help

  • Before using the car, ask yourself whether you really need to make the journey, or whether you could easily walk, cycle or use public transport

  • if you must drive, ensure that your car is regularly serviced, your tyres are at the correct pressure, drive smoothly and turn off your engine when your car is stationary

  • At home, buy water-based or low solvent paints, varnishes, glues and wood preservatives

  • Avoid burning solid fuels if possible, and if you live in a smoke control area, burn only authorised smokeless fuels

  • Avoid lighting bonfires, but if you must, don't light them when pollution levels are high or when the weather is still and cold. Only burn dry material and never burn household waste
