Shigella is also called bacillary dysentery.

Drinking water contaminated with human faeces or by eating food washed with contaminated water. 

• Is common amongst young children

• Is also common after foreign travel to areas where hygiene is poor

   

Symptoms 

The incubation period is 1 to 7 days. Symptoms include bloody diarrhoea.
