Meat, eggs, poultry, and milk. Green vegetables, fruit and shellfish can become contaminated through contact with manure in the soil or sewage in the water. Contamination is also possible if raw and cooked foods are stored together. Most tortoises, terrapins and other pet reptiles can carry salmonella. Dogs, cats, and rodents can also occasionally become infected.

Symptoms 

Usually 12 to 72 hours for symptoms to develop. Symptoms include fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Symptoms usually last 4 to 7 days and clear up without treatment. Infection may be very severe, and in some cases may be fatal in the very young and very old.
