How do I get my dog back?

If you have lost a dog please call the Animal Warden on 0118 974 6000 on the next working day. You can also search our database to see photographs of dogs that we have picked up.

If you think we have your dog you should arrange to come into the office during normal working hours: 8.30am - 5pm Monday to Friday.

Proof of identity

Before your dog is given back to you you must provide proof of your identity, eg: driving licence or utility bill and proof of ownership - this could include any of the following:

  • A printed photograph of the dog - a picture on a mobile phone is not acceptable

  • A vaccination certificate

  • A letter on headed paper from a vet

  • A pedigree certificate

  • Receipt of purchase

  • Pet insurance certificate

Fees

When we are satisfied that you are the owner and you have paid the Council fee you will be given the location of the dog and a form to take to with you to the kennels. The kennels will not release the dog without the form. You will also be expected to pay any kennelling fees and veterinary expenses that have been incurred.

Any out of hours call out for the collection of a stray dog - whether the dog is actually collected by the contractors or not - will incur charges.  An invoice will be sent to the owner of the dog as soon as possible after the rescue.

Bring proof of ownership

We will not under any circumstances release a dog unless satisfactory proof of ownership is provided.
