Sustainable Design and Construction Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

About the document

The Sustainable Design and Construction Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) and Companion Document (Developers Guidance Note for the 10% Renewable Energy Requirement of South East Plan Policy NRM11) provide sustainable design and construction advice for new developments. This means including environmentally friendly technologies and materials (e.g. those that produce renewable energy) in the construction of buildings and structures.

This document was adopted on 28 May 2010 following a period of public consultation from 9 February to 23 March 2010.

Setting design and construction standards

Advice on issues such as water resource management, flood risk management, biodiversity, waste, sustainable transport and health safety and well-being can also be found in the Sustainable Design and Construction SPD.  The Council will encourage new development to exceed current statutory standards for sustainability in construction and design and to set new standards for excellence.

Permitted development

This SPD also provides guidance to householders on their permitted development rights to install limited forms of renewable energy/ low carbon technology on their home, without the need to apply for planning permission.
