Wokingham Borough Retail Study

About the study

Wokingham Borough Council commissioned Donaldsons to undertake a Retail Capacity Study for the Borough which was published in August 2007. Its purpose was to guide decisions on the amount and location of future retail floorspace development to be identified in the Borough's Local Development Framework. The study examines retail growth until 2026 to cover the timescale of the Local Development Framework and draft South East Plan.

What is in the study

The retail capacity study focuses predominantly on the main centres in the Borough: Wokingham Town Centre, and Woodley, Earley and Twyford District Centres.

In particular, the study seeks to:

  • Inform the Local Development Framework process.

  • Improve understanding of the patterns of retailing in the Borough and how the various retail sectors can be strengthened.

  • Enable the Council assess the scale and type of need for new development inWokingham town centre.

  • Assess retailer demand in Wokingham town centre

  • Show how the three smaller centres of Woodley, Earley and Twyford can move forward through the plan period.

  • Assist the Council to take decisions on planning applications for retail developments.
