Minerals and Waste Planning

Minerals

The Wokingham Borough is home to several 'mineral' deposits of sharp sand and gravel. These areas are shown on our interactive mapping system. It is important that the land under which minerals exist isn't built upon before they are extracted. This is because minerals are a very important and finite resource. Sharp sand and gravel in particular are used to help support our construction industry and have a variety of domestic uses such as in gardens and on driveways.

Waste

The disposal of waste is another aspect of life in the community that needs to be planned for. Wokingham Borough Council has already joined up with Reading Borough Council and Bracknell Forest Council in a scheme called re3 to help manage our waste. As a local authority we also work with the Joint Strategic Planning Unit (JSPU) who are developing a Minerals and Waste Strategy for all of Berkshire. This is called the Joint Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework.

The Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework

The Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework is written and structured in the same way as the Wokingham Borough LDF, with the exception that it only deals with minerals and waste planning issues. In the interim of the Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework being completed, some policies from the old Replacement Minerals Local Plan (2001) and the Waste Local Plan (1998) have been saved. More information on the progress of the Joint Minerals and Waste Local Development Framework is available on the JSPU website.
