Is planning permission needed

Is planning permission needed

Planning permission

Planning permission is normally required before most building works are carried out or changes are made to the use of land or buildings.

Some types of work are covered by 'permitted development'. To find out more visit the Planning Portal website

Certificates of lawfulness

To confirm if your proposal meets permitted development rules you can submit a certificate of lawfulness. To find out more visit the Planning Portal website.

Restrictive planning conditions

Permitted development rights can sometimes be removed by restrictive planning conditions. These are different from a restrictive covenant.

To find out if there are restrictive conditions check the property history by visiting or contacting our planning department

Our planning history records go back to 1 July 1948. Applications pre-1999 are on microfiche files and applications post-1999 can be seen on our planning application search.
