This parish consists of an area surrounding the town of Wokingham on its south-eastern side, but its name does not mean outside Wokingham. Historically when the parishes were church parishes, there was a local area which belonged to Wiltshire which was therefore known as Wokingham Without (i.e. outside) Berkshire, whereas the Town was ‘within’ Berkshire.
The major housing area within the parish is Pinewood, a much favoured residential area to the north of Crowthorne. The northern part of this parish is mainly rural with much attractive scenery and older-type houses and cottages, some of which date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
Windsor Forest
Extensive woodlands, part of the ancient Windsor Forest, provide some of the most charming sylvan views of Berkshire. Long rides give vistas through the trees and the woodlands and heaths are made colourful in early summer by the extensive plantations of rhododendrons, which flourish in this light, sandy soil.
Heathlake
Heathlake, formerly part of the Palmer Estate, is now a site of special scientific interest due to the rare plants growing there. The entrance is on Nine Mile Ride near to St Sebastian's roundabout. The major housing area within the parish is Pinewood, a much favoured residential area to the north of Crowthorne.
Leisure
There is a golf course on the parish boundary close to Crowthorne and Wellington College. Pinewood Leisure Centre, which has been developed by the Parish Council for more than 20 years provides a wide range of sport and leisure facilities which are listed elsewhere on this site.
The north-eastern part of this parish is mainly agricultural but it is well wooded and displays much attractive rural scenery with older-type houses and cottages, some of which date from the 16th and 17th centuries.
