Parks and grounds maintenance

The Parks and Open Spaces team is responsible for the grass cutting and maintenance of open spaces and associated facilities throughout the Borough.

There are 238 hectares of parks and open spaces which include:

  • Local parks

  • 35 outdoor sports pitches

  • Tennis courts

  • 4 pavilions

  • 18.1 hectares of highway grass verges

  • Sponsorship sites

  • Leisure centre grounds

  • Over 95 play areas

Hedge cutting

We cut hedges in the Borough’s parks and open spaces twice per year in September/October and again in February/March. The timing of these cuts is to ensure nesting birds are not disturbed.

Highway hedges are cut as required.

If the hedge growth becomes a problem and needs to be cut back and earlier than indicated, then cutting will take place if it is deemed necessary.

Shrub pruning

Shrubs are pruned once every 3 years with a monthly litter pick between April and October.

Any growth obstructing footpaths is cut back as required.

Litter Bins

We empty approximately 500 litter bins in our parks and open spaces and children’s play areas. These are emptied once a week between Mondays and Fridays depending on the location. Bins on highways are the responsibility of our Waste team.
