North Wokingham Distributor Road

North Wokingham Distributor Road

Why we're building a North Wokingham Distributor Road

There will be 4,000 new homes built in Wokingham by 2026 as part of our projects to build more houses. The North Wokingham Distributor Road will provide access to the new developments and help minimise the impact of increased traffic.

See the Major New Roads map. See the North Wokingham Major Development webpage. See the North Wokingham Major Development progress map

Consultation on the route

In September 2013 and October 2013 we consulted on routes for the North Wokingham Distributor Road. We got about 1,500 responses. This was one of our biggest consultation responses ever.

We collected lots of useful information and there was a clear public preference for Alternative B. Following some suggestions and concerns raised by the consultation on 27 March 2014 our Executive approved funding for further technical studies.

We refined the design detail of Alternative B to take account of these suggestions and concerns and we presented to the Executive this refined recommended route at the end of September 2015.

Current status

Small sections of the have opened at Matthewsgreen and Kentwood Farm. Construction has begun on sections at Keephatch Beech and Kentwood Farm while design work has started on the remaining sections, including west of Old Forest Road.

The Bell Foundry Lane is being improved as part of the North Wokingham Distributor Road (NWDR) between the roundabout on Twyford Road and the Thames Water Sewage Treatment works. The road will be widened to 7.3m to the north away from Cantley Park.  A 3m footway/cycleway will be constructed on the north side of Bell Foundry Lane separated by a 2m tree lined verge and 3m grassed swale to capture run off from the road and footway. The bend on the corner of Cantley Park is being smoothed out and a footway cycleway will be constructed within Cantley Park from the bend at the east end of Bell Foundry Lane and link with the existing footway/cycleway adjacent to Ashridge Farmhouse.

The Ashridge Farm Section of the NWDR will continue from the Thames Water Sewage Treatment Works access on Bell Foundry Lane, north of Ashridge Farm and connect to the new roundabout on Warren House Road.

Current project status

We are currently awaiting for the reserved matters application to be concluded so that Detailed Design can commence.

Planning application

Improvements to the existing Bell Foundry Lane received outline planning consent in October 2016 as part of a hybrid Planning Application by developer Berkeley Homes for a residential Development north of Bell Foundry Lane (Planning Ref 161839).

Following Outline consent , Wokingham Borough Council agreed to deliver the road improvements and has undertaken preliminary design in order to satisfy the reserved matters.  A reserved matters Application was submitted to the Planning Authority in October 2017 and we expect these to be concluded in early 2018 to enable detailed design to commence.

Following conclusion of the reserved matters, detailed design will be undertaken in order to produce construction drawings and allow and planning conditions to be discharged.  Detailed Design is programmed to take place in early 2018 to allow construction to commence in the Summer of 2018.

Subject to concluding the reserved matters and satisfying any planning conditions, construction of the road is planned to commence in summer 2018.

Advanced arboriculture work including crown lifting and removal of some select trees is scheduled to take place before the end of February 2018 ahead of Bird Nesting Season.

Berkeley Homes will also be constructing the first 100m of new footway/cycleway in March 2018 between Twyford Road and the first development access as this is a pre-occupation condition of their planning permission.
