Why we're proposing improvement to Barkham Bridge
The current Barkham Bridge is an existing highway structure along B3349 Barkham Road, operating on a priority give-way system thereby enabling vehicular traffic to cross the Barkham Brook. The improvements as currently proposed include the construction of a new highway bridge in order to accommodate continuous flow two way traffic. These improvements are needed in order to support major new developments in Wokingham borough, in particular the Arborfield Garrison major development.
The Barkham Bridge project consists of a new bridge structure across the Barkham Brook and approximately 300m of associated carriageway realignment. The new bridge is to be constructed south of the existing Barkham Bridge within private land. The existing Barkham Bridge Structure is to be retained and be converted to a shared footway/cycleway, connecting the existing sections of footway to the east and west
Current project status
The project is currently in detailed design, focusing on the design of the structure, the drainage strategy and we are also working with the Environment Agency with regards flood mitigation. Environmental surveys are being conducted and ground investigation works have been carried out to locate existing underground utilities. There will be limited hedge clearance in March where necessary to create access to the site.
