Wokingham town and borough councils are working together to carry out improvements to the Market Place.
We've held meetings and workshops with local residents to try and balance the different needs of people for this space - including those with disabilities.
Currently we are at the pre-construction stage, working on the detailed design and feasibility with the contractor, Balfour Beatty. Scanning has shown a 'spaghetti junction' of services and utilities beneath the surface and now we need to dig a series of trial holes to confirm their positions. This will inform the final design, timescales and costs.
This work is planned to commence on 9 January and be complete by the end of the month, with a total of 22 holes required together with some further tests. Neighbours on the Market Place are already aware but will be contacted individually again where they are directly affected. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact of the work but it will cause some disruption and is likely to be noisy at times. Towards the end of the programme it will be necessary to temporarily close the road outside Boots with traffic using the bus lane and buses re-routed.
On 6 and 7 November 2015 the latest proposals for the Market Place (PDF document) were displayed following feedback from earlier consultations.
On 16 November 2015 a workshop to look at materials, street furniture and signage for both the Market Place took place. The workshop included:
Residents were able to provide feedback on this through a questionnaire and you can see a summary of the Market Place questionnaire responses (PDF document).
