Research Governance Framework

What is the Research Governance Framework?

The Research Governance Framework – RGF – applies to all councils with social service responsibility.

It is a framework introduced by the Department of Health and it requires that we have procedures in place to approve research projects to make sure that research is carried out to a high standard.

We also have a duty of care to our service users, their families and carers, and to our staff who might be the subjects of any research.

What are the benefits?

  • Duplication of research is prevented
  • It ensures that certain groups of service users or staff are not being over consulted
  • The dignity, rights, safety and well-being of researchers and participants are protected
  • All research is properly prepared and planned and carried out in a uniform and consistent way
  • Research is relevant to us and our service users
  • Research is ethically sound and based on approved and safe methods
  • Participants receive feedback and feel involved in improving services

What does this mean?

Before starting your research, contact the Research Governance Framework Co-ordinator to discuss what you might want to do.

If your research idea seems suitable, you will need to get approval. You will have to:

  • Prepare a research proposal and

  • Fill in an application form which should cover the areas outlined in the guidance notes

If you are carrying out research through a university, your supervisor will give you advice and support in preparing your research proposal.
