Tenant's Right to Buy their home

The Right to Buy scheme offers secure tenants the opportunity to purchase their home from their local council. However there are some exceptions like Sheltered Housing units.

If the secure tenancy commenced prior to 18 January 2005, tenants can benefit from the Right to Buy scheme after 2 full years as a tenant. If tenancy began after this date the Right to Buy does not apply until after 5 years.

Members of tenants families over the age of 18 may join in the Right to Buy if they permanently lived with the tenant for 12 months prior to the application.

The Right to Buy offers discounts of up to 60% for houses for tenants of at least 30 years and 70% for flats for tenants of 15 years plus. However, there is a maximum discount of £38,000 covering London and the South East. This may be less in other parts of the country. This does mean that most people applying to buy their home are restricted to this maximum discount figure.

The booklet the Right to Buy your home explains more about the application process and the discount rules.  Please find attached an application form for you to dowload.

If you are interested in purchasing your home, and would like more information about the scheme, please phone 0118 974 3770 or email housing@wokingham.gov.uk
