Supporting people programme

Supporting People Programme logo
Supporting People is a Central Government initiative that went live in April 2003. The programme provides housing related support to a wide range of vulnerable adults, examples being:

  • Older people
  • People with learning disabilities
  • People with mental health problems
  • People with physical disabilities
  • Women fleeing domestic violence
  • Young people leaving care
  • Other vulnerable groups

Methods of support

The support may be given through specialist supported housing, or even by floating support in their own homes. The programme will enable people in need of these services to live more independently.

Supporting People gives local authorities responsibility for commissioning and funding existing and new support services. This is an opportunity to enhance and develop provision based on local need.

Housing related support services have not previously been subject to a process of rigorous quality monitoring and review. Supporting People introduces a clear requirement on authorities to set service standards, collect information on the quality of service being provided, and conduct regular reviews.

Unhappy with the quality of support you receive?

If you are unhappy with the quality of support that you are receiving from your support workers, please try and speak with your support worker or their manager.

If, after speaking with them, you are still unhappy, or you do not feel comfortable speaking with them, you can call and speak to someone from our Supporting People Team by calling 0118 974 6867.
