Fire safety

By following simple guidelines you can reduce the chance of a fire starting in your home and help to keep everyone and your home safe.

  • Do not leave pans of hot oil unattended.

  • Do not overload plug sockets.

  • Avoid using paraffin or oil heaters.

  • Keep all escape routes (such as passageways, corridors and hallways) clear.

  • Test smoke alarms every month

If a fire starts

  • Close all doors and windows to prevent the fire spreading, if safe to do.

  • Get everyone to leave the building for a place of safety.

  • Call the fire brigade by dialling 999.

  • Tell your neighbours only if you can do this without putting yourself in danger.

 Smoke alarms

We strongly recommend that you fit smoke alarms in your home.  Smoke alarms will give you early warning of smoke or fire and can save lives.

  • Make sure you follow the maker’s instructions when you fit them in your home.

  • It is your responsibility to maintain any smoke alarms that you fit.

  • Remember to test smoke alarms regularly.
