Breaks away from the home
These can include:
Residential Care Homes
As well as providing long term or permanent care, some council-owned homes and private or independent residential homes can also offer short term care to give carers a break. They can provide and assist with daily living tasks, such as washing, bathing, dressing, assisting to the toilet and offering assistance at meal times, in a 24 hour care home environment.
Nursing Homes
Nursing Homes provide the same range of services as residential homes, but in addition they have trained nurses to meet specific nursing care needs.
Short Break Centres
Short Break Centres are places where physically disabled adults can go, to enable their carers to have a break from their caring role. Some of these are specialist centres, geared towards people with particular needs: for example Brambles Respite Centre is a centre for people with a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. The centres offer activities and outings that help stimulate and entertain people during stay. The centres have trained staff to meet people’s needs whether residential or nursing.
EMI Homes
People who have a diagnosis of dementia require a stay in a residential or nursing home that has staff with specialist knowledge of dementia, to ensure that the person’s needs are met.
