A short break is designed to give a break to the carer; to enable them to take some time away from their caring role, knowing that the person they care for is being well looked after.
What is a short break?
A short break can come in many different forms, from a day sitting service, so the carer can go shopping, visit friends or just have some time to themselves, to the cared for person having a short break in a residential home, nursing home or short break centre.
Who might need a short break?
The Adult Disability Team can provide a short break service for carers of:
- Adults with a physical disability from the age of 18 upwards
- Adults with long term illness
- Adults requiring nursing care
- Adults with dementia
Who can access it?
Anyone who undertakes a caring role for a relative or friend may be able to access short break services if they meet the eligibility criteria. To find out more call the Adult Disability Contact Team on 0118 974 6800.
What is available?
Who decides if we are able to access these services?
The need for the short break service is identified in an assessment under the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, which includes assessments of carer’s needs under the Carers Recognition and Services Act 1995. A care manager will carry out these assessments.
