Carers assessment

A carers assessment gives you a chance to talk about your needs as a carer and the possible ways we could help. This is often done at the same time as we look at the needs of the person you care for. There is no charge for an assessment.

What happens in the assessment?

The assessment is an informal discussion which covers areas and issues such as:

  • The tasks undertaken and time involved
  • The impact on the areas of your life, such as your health, or work commitments, any particular
  • Difficulties encountered in carrying out your caring role and your feelings about being a carer
  • What help or support would improve the situation

When will the assessment take place?

The assessment would normally take place when the needs of the person you care for are first assessed, or in any reviews of their needs afterwards. However, you can approach us for a carer's assessment at any time if your situation changes or you find it harder to cope.

If the person you care for does not want to be assessed or if after an assessment they refuse to have any services then you can have a carer’s assessment of your own.

For further details contact the Community Care team which would deal with the person you care for.
