Learning disabilities
Learning Disability Services comprise 3 distinct, but closely linked local services:
- Wokingham – based at the Acorn Community Centre, Woosehill
- Earley – based at the Crescent Centre, Lower Earley
- Woodley – temporarily based at 2 local churches
The modernisation project began by listening to what service users and their carers wanted; more work, more choice, more inclusion in the local community. This is very much in line with what the government is saying. The earlier phases of the process are almost complete but services will continue to evolve.
The model of service
People are offered choices of activities in their own community. This makes it easier to get there and enables greater independence.
Where interest and needs can‘t be met locally, people are helped to access appropriate activities in other parts of the service.
The service:
- Provides support for adults over 18 years old to access a broad range of day time activities and opportunities. It may be offered as a single service or be part of a package of services arranged and agreed between you and your care manager.
- Has links with Bracknell and Wokingham College and supported employment.
- Provides access to Special Olympics
- Offers access to Growing Places Berkshire - now a registered charity - providing horticulture learning opportunities
- Provides support for community activities such as sport, swimming and bowling
- offers support to those who have a higher level of need through an outreach service
If you are interested in learning more about the service we provide talk to your care manager, and if it is right for you, you will be invited to visit.
If you decide to come, we offer an introductory period when you start, so that you can talk to staff and decide together what activities will suit you best.
You can expect from us:
- That the services you receive and the activities that you will do take into account your social, religious and cultural needs and we will listen to your views
- You will be provided with a trained and supervised member of staff - called a key worker - who will ensure you get to your activities and will help you put your views across
- Your progress will be reviewed with you regularly, and any records about you will be kept safely and securely. These can be shared with you if you ask, and if for any reason this is not possible, we will give you an explanation why
- Where transport is provided, we will ensure that it meets statutory regulations for safety, has appropriate escort supervision, and time spent on travel is kept to the minimum possible within local driving conditions
- All staff will deal with issues of personal safety immediately, and follow the Adult Protection procedures. Further information about keeping safe is available to you on request from your keyworker
- We will respond to any complaint within 5 working days and indicate what we plan to do
- We will ensure the standard of service meets the requirements of all external inspection standards
Drop-in service
A drop-in service is being set up as part of the preventative agenda for people who do not qualify for a service under the fair access to services criteria.
