Personal Emergency Egress Plans or 'PEEPs' are currently being developed to assist staff and managers in identifying the needs of disabled visitors and employees in the event of an emergency evacuation.
For many people circulation, particularly within multi-storey buildings frequently involves the use of lifts. In the event of an evacuation these lifts will be unavailable and for many, their principal form of access/escape is now unavailable. In addition staff or visitors with sensory impairments, may not be aware that an evacuation is in progress. The situation is complicated particularly for staff who may work in more than one location.
The Personal Emergency Egress Plan is an attempt to identify the issues and then establish an agreed plan for overcoming barriers that may prevent an individual from raising the alarm and/or proceeding to a suitable exit out of the building.
The plans are designed to encourage discussion, and for interested individuals to identify relevant needs in terms of raising the alarm, moving to a refuge, then moving to a final exit.
