Find it hard to get your voice heard?
Not if you join Y10 (Youth 10) or stand as a candidate for the United Kingdom Youth Parliament (UKYP) to be Wokingham’s Member of Youth Parliament (MYP) or Deputy Member of Youth Parliament (DMYP)
What is the United Kingdom Youth Parliament?
The UKYP (United Kingdom Youth Parliament) is a national organisation made up of young people like you, who want to speak out on issues that concern young people.
You can stand for election to represent the views of young people in your area if:
- You are between 11 and 18 years of age
- You live or go to school in Wokingham Borough
Each year there will be posters in every youth centre and school. Any young person who is interested in speaking out for young people can fill in an application form during the election process or contact Sharon Holder on 07714 226 731 or email: sharon.holder@wokingham.gov.uk
What is Y10?
Y10, also known as Youth 10, is the Youth Forum developed in 2001 by a group of young people from the Youth Centres in Wokingham Borough to represent the issues, views and opinions of all young people in Wokingham Borough. As a member of Y10, you can expect to have a voice on issues, as well as informing and being consulted on Council policies, projects and initiatives. You will also have a role in supporting the MYP and Deputy MYP. As a group, you will plan your own programme of activities and events supported by your Youth Worker. There will be an opportunity to get involved in sub-groups on specific issues. This will be an optional extra, which you may or may not wish to get involved with depending on your availability and personal interests.
How much will it cost?
At meetings, we’ll provide refreshments, give you back your travel costs, and provide any resources you may need to do your job representing the young people of our unitary authority. You may want to buy occasional snacks and drinks at some events.
Special needs
We want everyone to be able to take part. The range of special needs that individuals have is vast and may include:
- Wheelchair/mobility access and support
- Sign language or other language interpreters
- Childcare or you may be a Young Carer
- Large print text/ Braille/ audio taped letters
- A personal support worker
We are committed to equality of opportunity for all. Let us know what your needs are and we will work with you to try to find the best way to enable you to be an active member of Youth 10.
How do I join?
If you are aged between 12 and 19 and interested in speaking out, getting involved and making a difference you are welcome to join. All you need is commitment and enthusiasm in taking part in the activities and you must be willing to have fun. Just call Sharon Holder on 07714 226 731 or email: sharon.holder@wokingham.gov.uk for a form or contact your nearest youth centre for more information.
