Special Educational Needs

We undertake Statutory Assessments for children with Special Educational Needs. We arrange school placements and needs identified on a child's Statement. You can contact us to request a Statutory Assessment. Your school or pre-school setting can also make this request, or an Educational Psychologist may make a referral.

If children have literacy difficulties, they may receive support from the Learning Support Service. Primary and secondary schools can request assessment and advice.

The Service can also provide:

  • Assessment and advice for schools on individual pupil's special educational needs especially regarding literacy and numeracy
  • Parental consultation following the assessment of a pupil with literacy, numeracy or learning difficulties
  • Assisting schools in identifying other sources of information or advice
  • Teaching at one of our mini-bases or on a peripatetic basis for primary school pupils with severe specific literacy/numeracy difficulties
  • Teaching support for primary and secondary pupils with a statement of special educational needs.
  • Teaching support for primary and secondary pupils with specific literacy and/or numeracy difficulties
  • Teaching support for pupils with a range of learning difficulties, including pupils with Down's Syndrome

Special Educational Needs (SEN) Handbook

The Special Educational Needs (SEN) Handbook has detailed information about the assessment process, school admissions, and available support for children and young people. These issues and others are covered in further detail in the CAN (Children with Additional Needs) Guide.  Read our Special Educational Needs Handbook index to find out what information is included in the Handbook. Some of the Handbook is in the process of being updated, but all newly amended sections can be found, below.

Transition Handbook

The Transition Handbook has been written to support families with young people with additional needs as they move on to adult life. It covers a number of topics including education, social care, employment, benefits, housing and support. Read the Transition Handbook.
