Help for children and families

Difficulties can occur in families for many reasons, such as illness, disability, unemployment or low income.

How we help families and children

We work closely with children, young people and their parents, relatives or carers, talking together to try to find the best solution to problems. We also work with other organisations, such as education and health services. This gives us opportunities to provide a wider range of services.

The types of services vary according to the needs of the child, the age, cultural background - ethnicity - and the difficulty experienced.

Family centres

We have 2 family centres which focus on programmes for young families, such as learning new ways of handling problems. Families can also talk to staff about family matters, develop skills in managing a household, or simply call in to talk over issues.

Older children

For older children we have a service where young people can talk to staff individually, or meeting others in groups.

Services can be provided and reviewed for several days or weeks or until everyone feels the situation has improved.

Children and young people in trouble with the law

Children and young people who are in trouble with the law or at risk of becoming involved in crime come to the attention of the police, and sometimes courts. The police and courts have a range of options to choose from when deciding what should happen next.
