Help for children at risk of harm

The wellbeing of children and young people is most important to us and we have a legal duty to protect them.

Children at risk of harm

Sometimes families are afraid that their child may be separated from them. This only happens in extreme cases or in emergencies.

We protect children and young people who are in danger or at risk because of neglect, physical, emotional or sexual abuse.

Protecting children and young people

Because of our responsibilities to children and young people, we may become involved with families, even when they do not want this.

We always try to keep everyone involved informed about what is happening and deal with all calls from adults and children with care and discretion.

How we protect children

We work out a plan of support so that the child is not put in danger again.

If the situation does not improve, we may need to put the child's name on the 'Child Protection Register'. This means that professionals who are interested in that child's wellbeing - e.g. GP, teachers, social workers, etc. - will regularly look at the child's situation.

Families are always involved in all decisions and arrangements concerning their child and data protection regulations.

Confidential information

Sometimes, when families or members of the public ring us up with information which is sensitive and highly personal, they ask us to keep it confidential. We will always strive to do this.

There are times when information may be shared with staff in other agencies to help us understand the problem and work out the best solution. Our staff and professionals from other agencies with whom we have contact will treat all information as confidential.
