What is Special Guardianship?
Special Guardianship is a legal process by which parental responsibility for a child can be obtained by an adult who is of significance to the child (e.g. by a grandparent, an uncle or aunt, an adult sibling or a previous foster-carer) and who wants to have the practical and legal responsibility of providing ‘parenting’ to the child throughout the remainder of ‘his/her’ childhood, without the child’s legal relationship with his/her parent(s) being terminated (as would happen if the child was adopted.)
