Who can adopt?

We give careful consideration to the qualities and experiences offered by prospective applicants. We welcome applications from people from a wide variety of backgrounds and operate an equal opportunities policy so that all enquiries are carefully considered, regardless of marital status, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or religion.

Adoption criteria

The criteria we use as a guideline for people seeking to adopt include:

  • You must be at least 21 years old
  • You can be married, in a partnership, or single
  • If you are married or living with a partner you will be expected to demonstrate a stable relationship
  • You can have children of your own
  • You will need to be in good enough health to reasonably expect to be able to care for a child for the rest of his or her childhood and beyond
  • At least one of the applicants must live in the UK, Channel islands or the Isle of Man.
