Adoption

What is adoption?

Adoption is a legal process by which the parental responsibility for a child is transferred from the child’s birth parent(s) to another adult/other adults who has/have put him/her/themselves forward to take on the full practical and legal responsibility of parenting the child throughout the remainder of his/her childhood and into adulthood.

Why are children adopted?

A child is almost always placed for adoption because of difficulties within his/her own family. There is a particular need for applications from people from ethnic minorities or from people looking to adopt school aged children, sibling groups, children with developmental delays or learning difficulties or those with complex backgrounds. We really need people who can offer a child or sibling group a loving and supportive family for life.

Why adopt with Wokingham?

As a small borough, Wokingham works with potential adopters who live up to 2 hours’ travelling distance away and we will support you through the adoption process, and after if necessary.
