Pollution from Industry
The Council control certain industrial activities known as 'prescribed processes' that have the potential to cause pollution. Such activities are 'permitted' by the council who check that conditions to minimise pollution are being complied with.
The Pollution Prevention and Control - PPC - Regulations 2000 introduced 3 separate, but linked, systems of pollution control:
- Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control - IPPC - which covers larger installations known as A1 installations which are regulated by the Environment Agency - eg. landfill sites and incinerators,
- Local Authority Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control - LA-IPPC - which covers installations known as A2 installations, which are regulated by local authorities - eg. glass manufacturing and foundries,
- Local Authority Pollution Control - LAPC - which covers installations known as Part B installations also regulated by local authorities - eg. concrete batching, vehicle respraying and waste oil burners. The Local Authority is concerned only with potential air pollution from Part B processes.
All 3 systems require the operators of certain industrial processes and other installations to obtain a permit to operate.
A permit will contain a number of conditions with which the operator has to comply and each process will be subject to regular inspection by the regulator. The conditions imposed are intended to control pollution - air pollution for Part B processes - and may involve the operator installing abatement equipment and introducing monitoring systems.
The Council maintains a Public Register of all permits issued which can be viewed during normal office hours at the Council Offices, Shute End, Wokingham. There will be a small fee for any photocopying. A list of permitted processes in Wokingham can be seen by clicking on the icon to the left of this page.
If you are an operator of a process which requires a permit to operate, the appropriate application forms and guidance are available for download from the appropriate download icon below. If you need further advice or information please call the Environmental Protection team on 0118 974 6395.
