Air quality monitoring
Our Air Quality Monitoring Programme has been running since 1995. It was initially set up in response to increased public awareness of air pollution and the introduction of new legislation covering air quality.
What is the Air Quality Monitoring Programme for?
The monitoring programme is designed to provide:
- A clear picture of air quality within the Borough
- Allow for assessment of local air quality with regard to compliance with relevant air quality standards
- The location of hotspots that would require further monitoring
- To enable trends to be identified
- Dissemination of our results to the public
- Increase public awareness to air pollution and how they can help to improve it
Vehicle emissions
Vehicle emissions are responsible for the majority of the air pollutants present in our air.
Vehicle emissions contain the following pollutants:
- Nitrogen Oxides - NOx
- Hydrocarbons e.g. Benzene, 1,3-butadiene
- Particulates - PM10
- Carbon Monoxide
- Carbon Dioxide
- Lead
The most recent review and assessment of monitoring data resulted in options for amending the Air Quality Management Area. Following public consultation on these options a new Air Quality Management Area was designated in May 2004. A copy of this order can be found in the attatchment below.
