M4 Junction 11 and Mereoak Improvement Scheme completed
After years of planning and two and a half years of construction, the work to improve Reading’s main traffic gateway – Junction 11 of the M4 – was completed in summer 2010. The junction is now open to traffic and all transport users.
The £65million scheme has improved the motorway junction as well as surrounding roads, including the Mereoak roundabout and part of the A33 Swallowfield Bypass in Shinfield.
A four-lane motorway junction with two new strategic road bridges around the existing motorway junction has been constructed. The existing road bridges have been retained, with one solely for pedestrians and cyclists and the other for buses.
The project aims to reduce congestion at the busy junction and increase public transport provision, pedestrian footways and cycle lanes. Since opening in the summer of 2010, journey times in peak rush hour have been reduced and queuing on the motorway is now a rare occurrence.
Fact sheets
Since May 2008, fact sheets for residents, local businesses and road users have been produced to keep people up-to-date on how the road works have been progressing.
In the final factsheet (Fact Sheet 7) you’ll discover exactly how the improvements will make your journey into Reading quicker and easier. And on the back pages you’ll find a timeline that shows you what has been achieved over the past two and a half years, from building a new footbridge to planting more than 4,000 trees and shrubs.
