Woodley Library 25th birthday celebrations

Between May 9 and 15, Woodley Library will be celebrating 25 years of being open on the site in Headley Road with a week of special events for young and old alike.

The week kicks off on Monday May 9 with an event called ‘Reminiscences of Woodley’. Anyone wanting to share their memories of Woodley in days gone by or find out more about the area in the past should come along to the library at 2pm to join in the discussions. The event costs £1.

There will be a quiz night on Tuesday May 10 at 7.30pm, so if you are a quiz fiend and can answer questions on anything from pop to politics, this could be just for you! There will be prizes up for grabs for the winning team and also a raffle in aid of Woodley Age Concern and Peapods. Tickets are available from the library, costing £3 which includes refreshments.

Staff at the library will be commemorating the actual day of opening with a celebration champagne breakfast for customers on Thursday May 12. Drop in for refreshments and a chat with staff between 9.30am and 11.30am.

Best selling author Jane Fallon will be visiting the library at 7.30pm on Thursday May 12 and will be answering questions about her work. Jane, who has just been nominated for writer of the year in the Glamour Awards, has written such popular works as Getting Rid of Matthew, Got You Back and Foursome. Before becoming a novelist, Jane pursued a career in TV, starting out as a freelance scriptwriter and then working as a scriptwriter on show such as EastEnders. As a producer she was involved in such shows as This Life Teachers and 30 things to do before you’re 30. The event will also include a book signing and refreshments. Tickets are available from the library for £3.

If you are interested in the history of flight, a talk about the Museum of Berkshire Aviation could be just for you. This will take place in the library on Friday May 13 at 6pm, ticket price £1.

There’s plenty going on for children as well during the week, with the usual rhyme times and story times taking place plus some special events at the weekend. On Saturday May 14, between 10am and 12noon, there will be a family fun morning drop-in event which will include rhyme times, story times, face painting and crafts. There will also be an opportunity to learn some circus skills at a special workshop on Sunday May 15 between 1.30pm and 3pm, cost £1 per child. To book a place, please call the library on 0118 969 0304.

Richard Alexander, Area Manager and Libraries Co-ordinator, said: "There is a great range of activities going on during Woodley’s birthday week for all ages and interests.
