Finalised results published this week (January 26th) by the Department for Education have confirmed that Wokingham’s students have achieved their best ever results in Key Stage 4 examinations.
The percentage of pupils gaining 5 or more A* to C grades in Wokingham has risen to 83.7 per cent in 2011 – over 4 percentage points higher than the national figure for maintained schools. The percentage of pupils in Wokingham gaining 5 or more A* to C grades including English and maths also rose this year to 67.6 per cent, placing Wokingham 8.7 percentage points above the national figure (58.9%). Nearly all the borough’s pupils – 99.4 per cent - got at least one GCSE or equivalent pass.
Councillor Rob Stanton, executive member for education services, said: "These results are excellent and show again that we offer high quality secondary school education in Wokingham Borough. Once more, I would like to congratulate all the young people on their GCSE achievements last year and to wish them all the very best with the next stage in their education. I would also like to thank the teachers for all their hard work in achieving these results, and acknowledge the important role that parents have played in supporting their children to achieve so much."
Disadvantaged pupils in Wokingham performed well in comparison to their national peers – 34.2 per cent achieved 5 or more A* to C grades including English and maths in Wokingham compared with 33.9 per cent nationally – and in addition, the achievement gap in the borough between disadvantaged children and their classmates has fallen from 49 percentage points in 2010 to 35 in 2011 at the key ‘5 or more A* to C grades including English and maths’ indicator.
Councillor Rob Stanton said: "Wokingham’s strong performance at Key Stage 4 does not allow for complacency; whilst results are generally favourable we must ensure that the good work carried out in schools to raise the attainment of some of our most vulnerable pupils continues."
