Provisional results published last Thursday (September 29) by the Department for Education for 2011 show that Wokingham Borough 7-year-olds have once again excelled in their national assessments, being placed within the top five local authorities for most measures.
Level two is the expected level for 7-year-olds. In Wokingham 91% achieved this level in reading, 88% in writing, 94% in mathematics and 95% in science. These results are well above the national averages, and place Wokingham second in the country for their performance at expected level in reading, mathematics and science and fourth overall for writing. Girls were ranked first for reading, maths and science.
For achievement at level three, which is above expected performance at this age, Wokingham achieved 35% at this level in reading, 13% in writing, 27% in mathematics and 32% in science. These results placed the borough fifth in the country for reading and mathematics, and eleventh for writing. For science, Wokingham was ranked third overall, with girls ranked first nationally.
Cllr Rob Stanton, executive member for education services, said: "It was really pleasing to see Wokingham Borough ranked in the top five local authorities for most of these measures, this is a great credit to the work of our schools. These assessments clearly show that our children are making very good progress with developing their essential literacy and numeracy skills in their primary schools."
