Staying safe over the Christmas period

The festive period is traditionally seen as a time for everyone to enjoy themselves, indulge and be merry.

However, this period in the year can be particularly hard for people with substance misuse issues. At a time when it may seem like everyone else is celebrating, KCA Wokingham is available to help those who feel isolated or may struggle to cope due to their drug and alcohol use.

Wokingham has one of the lowest drug and alcohol abuse problems in the South East but for those people dealing personally with substance misuse issues this Christmas, KCA can help in tackling those difficulties as well as wider social integration issues such as housing, employment and education. The charity offers a variety of services, including prescribing, counselling, group and 1:1 work, as well as complementary therapies and the Horizon project, which works with and establishes social enterprises to build and strengthen life, work and coping skills.

Carol-Anne Bidwell, DAAT commissioning officer, said: "KCA is also aware of the difficulties faced by people in recovery over the festive period, particularly the increased possibility of relapse. Therefore, the charity’s services are available to those who may feel that they need some extra support over Christmas and the New Year in continuing with their abstinence.

"Similarly, if you have concerns regarding someone else, KCA is on hand to offer information and guidance regarding substance misuse and how you can support that person in seeking help and can signpost to local specialist support services."

The focus for KCA is to encourage people in Wokingham to stay safe over the festive period and to support them in achieving this. The office is based at 38 Station Rd Wokingham RG40 2AE and will be open for drop-in between 10am and 4pm from December 28 to 30. Alternatively, residents can call KCA on (0118) 977 2022 for free, confidential advice and support.
