New youth club opens

A new club for year 8 and 9 students has opened at Woodley Airfield youth centre. The club which runs on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm and until 9.30pm in the summer offers, a great programme of activities that are fun and engaging as well sometimes challenging and designed to give young people new experiences and opportunities. As well as games, sports, arts and craft activities, the club also teaches young people healthy cooking, informs them about other health aspects and encourages them to bring ideas and thoughts for activities they would like to try.

In warmer weather, the youth workers will be organising more outdoor activities which could include kayaking, raft building, high ropes courses and even weekends away to residential activity centres.

Lead youth worker Kerry Legg said: "We are really excited to be opening a new youth club for the young people of Woodley. We understand that many young people stay in and play on the computer or games station but this is a really good break from that.  It’s a way to get some physical activity and mix with other young people."

The club which is run by Wokingham Borough Council’s youth service is being developed with young people rather than just being put on for young people. This means that the programme is not set in stone but young people can suggest ideas for activities that they would like to see introduced and try.

Kerry added: "We look forward to seeing young people coming and enjoying this great new club. All I would say is just try it. I am sure you’ll have fun."
