Could you be the voice of a generation?

Young people between 11 and 18 years old with something to say are invited to apply to become the Wokingham borough’s next Member of Youth Parliament (MYP).

The term of office will begin in February 2012 and will last for a year. Elections will be held from November 28 to December 4, with the results declared on December 7. Young people who live or go to school in the Wokingham borough are welcome to apply.

The MYP and Deputy MYP take part in the UK Youth Parliament, hosted by The British Youth Council, a registered national charity and provide a voice for young people locally. They are also members of the Children’s Trust Board and act as advocates on behalf of young people from across the borough.

Applications need to be submitted by October 31, including information on issues candidates would like to campaign on. Application forms are available from www.activeyouth.co.uk or by calling participation worker Sharon Holder on 07714 226731 or emailing: sharon.holder@Wokingham.gov.uk

The 2010 MYP elections saw nine young people campaigning to be elected and over 5,000 votes cast in schools, youth centres and community locations across the borough.

Current MYP Amy Longland from Maiden Erlegh School said: "Being the Member of Youth Parliament is a rewarding opportunity to be the voice of young people in your area. It gives you the opportunity to make a difference."

Head of youth service Nigel Shaw said: "This is a real chance for young people to be involved in decision making in their area and, through the regional and national sitting of the youth parliament, have an input into national politics. As well as representing young people here at the council and on our youth participation fund, the role on the Children’s Trust gives the MYP and their deputy a real input into services for children and young people.

"The positions are valued by officers and councillors alike and I have watched a series of young people grow into their posts gaining many skills which they have taken on into their future lives. I would encourage anyone interest to find out more."
