Mayor's Charities 2008-2009

Cllr. Pauline Helliar-Symons, Mayor of Wokingham Borough Council, is supporting 2 charities in her year of office which will benefit both the young and old in the Borough.

Life Education Centres' programme

Conceived in Australia by Ted Noffs in the late 1970s and was established in the UK in 1986.

The charity is committed to providing high quality support for schools, with age-specific educational programmes, giving children the information they need to:

  • Stay healthy
  • Stay safe
  • Enjoy and achieve through learning
  • Make a positive contribution to society
  • Achieve economic well-being

Many schools in the Borough have already signed up to this programme but the Charity's intention is to make it accessible to all children in Borough.

Link Visiting Scheme

Established almost 10 years ago, this locally based project works in partnership with Woodley Age Concern, Woodley Lookout and various local churches to offer friendship and support to elderly residents across Wokingham Borough. More than a third of older people across the country don't speak to a single person all week and loneliness is one of the most common problems in old age. Link provide an essential lifeline to those who feel isolated and alone.
