Race Equality Scheme

This Race Equality Scheme has been produced in line with the Race Relations - Amendment - Act 2000. The Race Relations - Amendment - Act gives public authorities a general duty to promote race equality. In addition there are a number of specific duties including the development of a Race Equality Scheme.

The Race Equality Scheme has been updated in 2006 and a new action plan put in place to cover 2007 - 2008. During 2007 - 2008 further work will be done to update the Council’s Equalities Standard, including each service area of the Council conducting a comprehensive Equality Impact Assessment, which will provide a more detailed sert of improvement actions for 2008 - 2009 and beyond.

Equalities policy

This Race Equality Scheme is not a stand alone document and the notion of promoting good race relations and engaging with all sectors of our community is not a new one for us. This scheme complements a number of other policies and commitments already in place. It should be read alongside the Equalities Policy developed in 2000 and the Social Inclusion Policy.

This should be considered in the context of the detailed work that is being carried out with schools and also within our Human Resources service. This document is a corporate commitment to the elimination of unlawful discrimination, the promotion of equality of opportunity and the promotion of good relations between different racial groups. It builds on the strengths of policies already in place and seeks to ensure that all services including partner organisations, now have a framework to enable them to embrace the spirit of the Act with confidence.
