Black and Minority Ethnic Forum

The Black and Minority Ethnic - BME - Forum has been running in Wokingham since December 2002. It was established as a result of some extensive research which identified communication between statutory and BME Communities, as something that needed improving.

Black and Minority Ethnic Forum membership

Membership now exceeds 75 and we regularly have over 30 people coming to each meeting. The Forum, which meets four times a year, is jointly chaired by a Community Member and a Councillor from Wokingham Borough Council. Currently the Chairs are Surjit Singh Jutla and Councillor Bob Wyatt who alternate from meeting to meeting.

Each meeting addresses a different issue from a Work Programme agreed by the Forum. Issues discussed include:

  • Educational achievment
  • Fostering and adopting
  • The health agenda in the area
  • Different funding sources

The Forum also scrutinises the Race Equality Schemes of the Council and PCT, runs events during Black History Month, and gives feedback on various consultations.
