Fly-tipping and dumped rubbish

Fly-tipping is the dumping of rubbish onto any piece of land which does not have a licence to accept waste. Fly-tipping is illegal as UK law requires that all rubbish is disposed of properly at licensed facilities and those people collecting, transporting, depositing and disposing of rubbish must be authorised to do so.

Fly-tipping is a criminal offence and can lead to prosecution with fines of up to £20,000.00 or six months imprisonment. The sentence may be more severe if considered at Crown Court or the waste is hazardous.

Fly-tipped rubbish costs taxpayers money through their Council Tax to be collected. It can also be dangerous as it can cause a hazard to the public and the environment if it enters the water course.

Rubbish of particular concern is any that includes:

  • Chemicals
  • Syringes
  • Asbestos
