Mediation

Mediation is a way of resolving disputes by helping the people involved to reach an agreement with the help of an impartial third party - the mediator. The parties in dispute (not the mediator) decide the terms of any settlement.

The impartial position of the mediator means that they do not  take sides, make judgments or giving guidance. The process of mediation treats both parties equally. Both parties must therefore have a desire to resolve the problem in hand. The mediator is responsible solely for developing interaction (and building consensus) between the parties

Mediation is different to the processes involved in advocacy, counselling, or arbitration, as the  problem-solving procedure is designed to  find a solution that satisfies everyone. A win/win approach. It differs from the legal process which is often said to produce a win/lose outcome.
