There are costs associated with dealing with a death and arranging a funeral.
It is important to establish whether or not the deceased had taken out a funeral plan. This would generally cover the costs of the funeral arrangements.
Receiving help with costs
There is no general death grant to help pay for funerals. However, if the person paying for the funeral is receiving any means tested benefits, they may be able to claim financial help from the Social Fund. Further information can be found in 'What to do after a death' booklet which is given out at the registrat. This booklet is part of the Department for Work and Pensions and can also be found on the Job Centre website.
If the deceased had a war disablement pension, then there may be help available from the War Pensions Agency.
Bereavement benefits
Widows, widowers and widowed parents are entitled to Bereavement Benefits. For more information on these benefits and how to claim, see the Department for Work and Pensions website.
National Insurance and tax information
For information on how a death affects national insurance and taxation, including inheritance tax, see the Inland Revenue's website.
